Do You Sew?

I have been interested in buying a sewing machine for the past couple of years.  I just have never researched it.  But today I’m starting my search and wanted to see if any of my blog friends have any input.

I’ve tried just typing sewing machines in to google and you can imagine the amount of info I got back.  I really don’t know WHERE to start.  I’ve never owned a sewing machine and haven’t used one much.  I basically just have the DESIRE and not much else.

These are the types of things I want to make:

Fabric Basket

Quilt

Pillows

Nothing complex.  Just simple household stuff.

So any suggestions? Any good blogs that you know of that are super sew happy that could be of some help?

Thanks friends!!!

I love those pillows! I wish I could sew. That would make finding the perfect color toss pillows so much easier!

I don't have any advice for the sewing machine, but I do follow a blog that has A LOT of info about this on it. Try http://thiscrazyblessedlife.blogspot.com/

She recently had an entire two weeks of sewing tutorials for really cute stuff!

I can't sew a button but think I should investigate this idea as well at some point... I think you can start taking lessons at hobby Lobby or joanne's and get a feel of the machines they have so you can see which works best for you? I am not sure...

I sew all the time! Mostly costumes and clothes. Plus, I've recently had my sewing machine serviced, so I know somewhat about different brands right now.

First and foremost, DO NOT buy a Singer. They used to be good, but have now outsourced everything to China, and so the machines break often and the parts are hard to get.

I have a Bernina, which I love, and it's a work-horse. My brother is a fan of his Brother (har har), but I don't think it's a good machine....too many bells and whistles, very finicky.

I can also recommend a Viking as a sturdy good starter machine. Or a Pfaff, which are (I hear) a-to-the-mazing, but there must be some drawback to them....somewhere.

Anyway, I got a Bernina Bernette, which is a simply machine and was less than $100. If you buy a used machine, take it to a repair shop to get tuned up and checked out before you do any sewing (you'll have to do this every 3-5 years anyway). And most of all....have fun! :D
