Catching Up With The Times

Big news in the McCoy household! (no we aren’t pregnant)  We have internet at our house now!! Hello 21st century!

The last time we had internet, other than our cell phones, was in 2008 and it was dial up AOL.  We live so far out that we couldn’t get any type of reliable service at a reasonable cost.  My sister-in-law (neighbor) tried satellite internet and it was as slow as dial up.  My mother-in-law (other neighbor) has an air card that she pays a ridiculous amount for but it does work most of the time.  It usually depends what side of the kitchen table you are sitting on.

Last week I called Dish Network (who we have our TV service through) and learned that they have upgraded their satellite internet to now work on something similar to the Verizon network.  So I got signed up and for only $33/month we now have reasonably fast internet.  It’s the smallest data package and speed though so we may have to increase it later on.

I of course have been using the internet at work to do everything in my life.  My boss doesn’t mind as long as it doesn’t interfere with my work.  Most of the time I get to work early so I can write, pay bills, take care of Thirty-One business, or reply to emails. Now though I can actually write blog posts early and not worry about getting so busy at work that I don’t have time to finish them in a reasonable time frame.  I can also work my Thirty-One business better and hopefully have more success.

Having internet is great by itself but our guy that did the installation also set us up for wireless.  Now I can use my Nook at home or we can sit on the living room couch and surf the net.

Next up in our move into the 21st Century we are upgrading our DVR.  Ours is 5 years old and only holds 350 hours.  Well we have saved every episode of Good Eats not to mention random movies here and there.  We are constantly at the verge of 0 hours left.  So we are upgrading to the Hopper from dish with 2000 hours and the ability to record 6 shows at one time!  I’m going to finally get to watch all these shows I’ve been missing out on!

I’m not sure how to handle all this technology!! HAHA!

Have a FABULOUS Monday!!

Nice!! DISH asked me to do an employee beta-test of the Hopper earlier this year and it has just gotten better and better. 2,000 hours recording space is amazing, and if you go to Radio Shack etc. and get a simple External Hard Drive you can plug that in and DOUBLE it to 4,000. I also really like the tile-based menu, and I can just click a show and select "record this" and it'll be right there waiting for me. Also, since you guys have internet, if you or your man like sports there's a really cool new Game Finder app by just pressing the blue button on the remote! Enjoy; I know we have!

It's so great to finally have internet, isn't it? We live in the boonies, and for the longest time we only payed the basic price - which was about as slow as dial up! We finally forked over the big bucks for real DSL and I feel like a new woman!

Stopping by from the TX bloggers group! Nice to meet you!

I am ridiculously excited for you!!! I have no idea how you managed without internet at home. I'm just glad your boss was nice enough to let you use their internet. But how many times were you sitting at home going, "Man, it would be nice to be able to google (insert anything here)." I do that all the time! :o)
